How is the American education system structured?
Generally, the American school system is divided into four levels:
1.Early Childhood Program (Nursery to Pre-K) – 2 to 5 years old,
2.Primary School (Grades 1 to 5) – 6 to 10 years old,
3.Middle school or junior high school (grades 6 to 8) - 11 to 14 years old, and
4.High School (Grades 9 to 12) — Ages 15 to 18.
Students graduating from high school (grade 12) are awarded a diploma or certificate. From there, many students go on to college or university, which is called higher education.
What are the goals and outcomes of American schooling?
A balanced approach to literacy
Balanced literacy is the balance of explicit language instruction with individualized learning and language exploration. It aims to balance whole language and phonics while learning how to read and write.
Critical phonics lessons are balanced with a rich literature from around the world (especially in the US) that demonstrates creativity and thoughtfulness in addition to essential phonics and literacy skills.
Everyday math skills
Everyday Math is a comprehensive program developed by the University of Chicago based on over 30 years of research, with proven success across the United States. It is consistently ranked as one of the top 10 academic mathematics programs internationally.
Everyday mathematics uses a spiral approach, meaning concepts are presented repeatedly across the curriculum in other applications or with deeper levels of complexity.
This hands-on, spiral curriculum not only meets each student where they are currently but continues to introduce skills and tasks throughout the elementary and middle school years. It builds solid, skill-based knowledge with a variety of problem-solving methods that students can learn and use in high school and beyond.
Practical and authentic education
American education emphasizes practical, authentic learning that incorporates real-life lessons and activities. Programs like Inspired Science are designed to engage all students through virtual field trips, videos, podcasts, texts, interactives, and more that deepen students' understanding of lessons beyond mere facts and figures.
The curriculum allows students at every age and level to demonstrate acquired knowledge and skills, including skills essential throughout life such as leadership, collaboration, critical thinking, public speaking, data analysis and problem solving. Emphasis is also placed on authentic tasks, where students apply what they have learned to create products or solutions to real-life problems.
This rigorous academic program is balanced by arts, music and sports instruction to develop students into well-rounded individuals.
Character development program
More than just academic success, American education also focuses on character development in students. For example, the Step II program offers a holistic approach to social-emotional learning (SEL) by providing a full range of SEL activities and objectives from kindergarten through high school.
The second step is closely aligned with the CASEL framework, which provides a foundation for implementing evidence-based SEL strategies in schools and communities. Through guided lessons, discussions, and activities, students develop key skills under the five CASEL competencies: self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness.
This character development program aims to promote positive behavior, global awareness, tolerance towards others and above all kindness and compassion among the students.
